The Story of Katy’s Heart Updated June 2012
June 16, 2010
Updated: August 2010 Updated: October 2011
Updated: June 2012
After 6 years of infertility, and several failed IVF cycles. Mike and I were finally pregnant. At our routine 18 week ultrasound instead of finding out if Baby Murphy was a boy or girl, we were informed that our baby had a serious heart defect.
The left side of her heart was only 1/4 of the size it should have been. She was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. At that point we were given the opportunity to terminate… but for us that was not an option. The alternative, we were told, was a series of heart surgeries to reconstruct her heart. The first surgery being immediately after birth.
Katy was born five weeks early due to my preeclampsia. On December 20th 2007 after a normal, and uneventful delivery, much to everyone’s surprise Miss Kathryn Marie Murphy was born screaming and PINK! After birth (and a few cuddles with mommy) Kate was taken to Children’s Hospital Boston.
The team at Children’s didn’t quite understand why Kate appeared to be doing so well, her "echo" still showed a significantly small left ventricle. Yet, somehow her little heart was keeping up with her body’s blood flow needs. She was a Christmas Miracle in the Cardiac ICU. No one on the floor has ever seen a HLHS baby this healthy. After 10 days of observation, it was decided that no surgery was needed at this point and they let us take our baby home!
At our two week cardiac checkup it was decided that more study was needed. Katy was admitted for a cardiac catheterization, and an MRI. After another 10 days of testing and observation, we were sent home on 3 heart meds, again no restrictions.
Over the last two years Katy has continued to baffle the doctors, because she is doing so well. Her heart meds have kept her healthy. Her diagnosis was changed from Hypoplastic Left Heart, to Restrictive Cardiomyopathy.
The only noticeable symptom Katy shows is that she is tiny and has a difficult time gaining weight, even though she is a great eater and is on a high calorie diet. We estimate she eats 1600 calories a day, and she only weighs 20 pounds. It became a concern when she stopped gaining weight 6 months ago.
As a result of her not gaining weight our cardiologist Dr. Marx, who is GREAT, decided that another Cardiac Catheterization and MRI was needed. The cath showed her pressures to be seven times the normal pressures. After doing well for so long, Katy’s care was turned over to the transplant team
As a result of her failure to thrive, a G tube was placed in August for feeds. Although it was not a decision I was entirely on board with, it was better than the NG tube. Unfortunately, even with the high amount of calories we are pushing on her she has not made any significant weight gain.
.Kate was listed as a status 1B on the UNOS Transplant List on July 29th 2010.
To meet Katy you would not believe that she’s a little girl waiting for a new heart. At this time, she is doing clinically well and acting like a happy and normal four year old. She goes to preschool and dance class. She loves playing with her brother!!
She is our ROCK STAR!!!
June 2012 Update
It’s hard to believe that we are still waiting for a heart for Kate. It has been almost two years since she was listed, and we were told the estimated wait would be two to three MONTHS. We have been blessed that Katy has been well enough to spend the majority of that time home and living a semi normal life of a 4 year old.
However, looks can sometimes be deceiving and although she is clinically doing well her heart is very sick and needs to be transplanted sooner than later. The longer she goes without a transplant the more damage she is doing to her lungs and other major organs.
It was discussed at length with the team on where to go from here. It was decided that Katy can not stay 20 lbs. much longer and can not continue to thrive without a new heart. So the decision was made to admit her in July for a cath and MRI and begin Milrinone treatment which will possibly help her grow and also push her up to a status 1 A making her four times more likely to get a heart.
Obviously, this wasn’t an easy decision for our family. As it will mean Katy having to live in the hospital. That said we all agree that now is the time to do that. Since we want Katy as healthy as possible for a successful transplant.

Weekends like these get us through the tough days!
We made a deposit this weekend in the good times that make it all worth while. We made some memories, memories that will get us through the rough days, weeks, dare I say months ahead of us.
We spent yesterday with our Riley Favorites…. the kids had a blast jumping and playing with their cousins and Mike and I enjoyed catching up and feeling the support from our extended family. We loved seeing how the babes have all grown…and looking at prom pictures. Just a great day was had by all.
Today we were able to cross another item off of our ‘Before Katy’s Admission” Bucket List…we went to visit our favorite boys of summer… at Fenway Park. Boy, did this day deliver. What a Gorgeous day day for a ball game. We were gifted some amazing tickets from a dear friends mom’s company…. A Big Shout out to FW WEBB!

Finding Our Way
It’s not like this was a surprise. Mike and I were both fully aware that this was most likely going to happen, in fact we both thought it would have happened long before now. However, we also thought that his leg of the journey would be behind us and we would be focusing on Katy and her new heart.
Thank you for all the kind words, encouragement, offers and for once again reminding us that we are not alone. So many of you have asked how you can help, what you can do, etc. I am so thankful each time I log on I am flooded with kind words and “What can I do to help”
The truth is I don’t really know yet. We don’t have a definite date yet we know it will be mid June after June 15th. (As long as Katy stays healthy") We don’t know how long we will be admitted for because we have no idea when a heart will come for Kate. We do know that as a 1A we are 5 times more likely to get a heart than we are as a status 1B.
For some reason I am not as worried or anxious about Katy and her new heart and getting there… I know what it is, I know what is expected and I can do that. I feel I can take care of that… that is something I can do it will be hard…but Katy will get me through that piece I get so much strength from that little Rockstar!
What scares me is everything else….
Patrick and making sure he is well taken care of and making sure he feels secure and comfortable and that his world is not turned upside down.
Laundry, cleaning, cooking, eating all the everyday things that we do that still need to be done while facing this life altering event.
My pride…is gone. I had to learn a long time ago to accept help and be grateful and thankful. I have also learned that it is just easier for everyone if I tell you what are needs are than having you try to guess and ending up with 10 visits on one day and 30 sets of crayons.
The Helping Hands site is up and ready to go when we do… so we should be set for meals.
I did set up an Amazon Wish List and I have to say I am not 100% comfortable with that… So I am not really sure if I will keep that going.
The Be A Rock Fund is a great source to help with meals, gas, parking and all the incidentals.
I never want to be greedy… I am thankful for every.single. thing that has been done for our family. I do know that as a mom I will do whatever it takes for my family and right now that means swallowing my pride and letting our village take care of some things for right now.
I can not wait until Katy gets her greatest gift of all and we can begin to Pay It Forward.
I have great plans for The Be A Rock Foundation.
Thank you!
You are all Rockstars in our eyes.
Much Love,
The Murphy’s

And the hits keep coming!
We always new this was a pos...sibility...we just prayed we would get a heart sooner.
Life for us is hard even on a good day. I was just finally seeing some happiness. I graduate I. May and was looking to head back to work in the fall and try to repick up the pieces. So obviously that isn't going to happen.
Now I am just in constant fear. Fear Katy won,t get a heart in time, fear for Patrick's childcare spot, fear of not being able to pay our rent due to the extra expenses of hospital stay. When we were last admittedly we had a bit of a cushion in the be a rock 4 Katy fund.we have none. Im scared and I hate that That we have been a charity case for the last 3 years...and as much as I hate that. I don't know how we will do this without help the gas and parking alone kills our budget. I know it is what it is but I can't imagine this life withou Katy...she is such a bright spot for all of us. Please pray things are about to get a whole lot harder.

Status Quo
Not much to report here.
We are gearing up for a our busy season… we hibernate for the Winter. Then we slowly emerge at the first sign of flip flop weather and we are going full throttle by May 1st and we run and run and run until November 1st.
I don’t know why it is… maybe it’s the germs, maybe it’s seasonal depression, or the cold. I don’t know but we spend our winters cuddled up. I love that time. We linger in our jammies a bit longer, we really slow down. As much as I enjoy our snuggled winters I love are fun filled, warm days. Whether our days are spent at the beach, the park, visiting our extended families, or late nights in the driveway drawing murals with side walk chalk, they are so much fun! So full, so busy…maybe that is why we spend the following 6 months recovering.
Hard to believe Katy’s last hospitalization was in November.
I am shocked and unbelievably happy and hopeful we can make it through the summer.
We see transplant on Tues and we have an Echo to check in on that funky heart. I know they are going to want to schedule a Cath… I am going to try to hold them off until end of June.
That’s all… not much to say like I said we are pretty status quo… and status quo is fine by me.

Scrapbook Sunday
Murphy Custom Creations is booming lately, and I haven’t had a lot of time to scrapbook. I managed to get a few pages done today.
DISCLAIMER: I surf the net and many scrapbooking blogs, boards etc. I am 99.9% none of these pages are my original design… I am sure I saw them somewhere, or they are my interpretation of a sketch. I am not a professional scrap booker… although I would like to be! I don’t list supplies and keep track of what came from where… that would take away valuable time that I can spend creating.
If you have a question… feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer you.

Wordless Wednesday
It’s been awhile since I posted one of these… I just couldn’t wait to share these pictures. I don’t have anything witty to say to accompany them…hence the Wordless Wednesday.
Oh, man we are in trouble!
Good thing she will have her little Big brother to look out for her…
Needless to say P. does not like to pose for pictures as much as his sister.
